Adventures

One of the best-visited museums in Slovenia, the Ptuj – Ormož Regional Museum, which was celebrating its 125th anniversary last year, keeps four collections of national importance. Most of them are displayed at the Ptuj Castle for you to discover their gems during your exploration.

TIBIA

The museum’s collection of musical instruments, comprising over 350 folk and classical instruments, includes a Roman double flute made from bone, bronze and brass. This instrument from the 2nd or 3rd century, called an “aulos” or “tibia”, is a rarity of international significance. Its precise mechanism with spinning rings for covering the holes reveals a technically perfected musical instrument, made for professional musicians.

A FULL-LENGTH PORTRAIT OF SULTAN MEHMED IV

The largest collection of turquerie art in Europe, which reflects European intellectuals’ early interest in foreign cultures, contains a number of portraits of Turkish and European military leaders and dignitaries, ladies from the Ottoman Empire, and people from far-off lands. It contains two portraits of Sultan Mehmed IV: one head portrait of him as a young man in a beautifully embellished turban and attire, which was painted in 1670, and the second of a mature man on a full-length portrait made a decade later.

IRON BOMBARD FROM MID-15TH CENTURY AND STONE-BALL CANNON FROM LATE 15TH CENTURY

The Collection of Arms at the Ptuj Castle includes the two oldest examples of cannons in Slovenia. The iron bombard from the mid-15th century and the 50-year younger cannon for shooting stone balls are among the most interesting remnants of late-Medieval cannonry in Central Europe.
