Adventures

In 2019, Ptuj celebrated 1950 years since it was first mentioned in written records, however its history goes even further back. We talked to Aljoša Ciglar, a historian and passionate tourist guide, about some of the city’s most attractive remnants of history.

Roman historian Tacitus wrote about a pivotal moment that happened in 69 in Poetovio, which affected the history of the Roman Empire. What happened in Ptuj?

One of the pivotal moments in our town’s rich history happened in 69. Illyrian legions met at the camp of the 13th Twin Legion, and supported Vespasian as the new Roman emperor under the leadership of Marcus Antonius Primus.

Roman tours, which visitors can book through TIC Ptuj, tell some of this history. What are the town’s biggest ancient treasures?

In addition to written records, the ancient Romans also left us with an abundance of archaeological remains. Our guided tours will take you to some of them. You will explore the Panorama Archaeological Park, the lapidarium on Muzejski trg, the first Slovenian open-air museum – the Povoden Museum, the famous Orpheus Monument, and ancient Roman inventions that are still in use today.

Ptuj tour guides keep proving that history is not boring. Which story do visitors find most captivating?

We designed Roman tours to bring old stories back to life, and make history more attractive. Visitors of all ages and nationalities always love the timeless love story of Orpheus and Eurydice, who even make a surprise appearance during the tour accompanied by music.
