The parish church was established in 1426 and the event was recorded in the land register of the upper castle. Researchers think that the church in Lovrenc was built because of a nearby castle, Maidburg, which consisted of two fortresses along the road Ptuj-Poljčane-Celje.
The church was first mentioned in 1323 in the tax record book of the Aquileia patriarch. It represents the unique church architecture in the area dating from the Roman period. During the Turkish invasions, the church was twice ransacked (1475 and 1495). The choir was built in 1855. In 1927, it was painted by Simon Fras, and in 1975 the Institute for Monument Protection Maribor covered with lime-wash more than a half of all paintings. A cemetery surrounded the church until 1824, to which bear witness a preserved wall and an arch with a representation of saint brothers Cyril and Method.
