St. Jurij Church (Lenart)

The church covered by double-ridged roof boasts an impressive bell-tower on the west and a Renaissance portal from 1532, which is very rare in the region. In the axis of the portal is placed a symbol of the Teauttmansdorf family, a rosette, to the left a vine-grape - a symbol of St George, patron saint of farmers and wine-growers. The four corners of grooved ribs separating the Renaissance-Gothic lower part of the bell-tower from the upper classical one, end in four masks. The nave is flanked to north and south by two Baroque chapels, and to east by a Gothic presbytery with a conclusion ending in five sides of an octagon. The sacristy still contains the original Baroque nets. The interior is known for the rib vault above the nave, while below the bell-tower and the choir leaning on four late Gothic round columns ending in a lancet-like arch, the vault is cross-ribbed. The chapels, north and south, contain altars adorned with statues made by Jozef Holzinger around 1770. The church of St George was first mentioned in 1388. Nothing has been preserved of the original building. The today's low Gothic nave dates from 1501. The bell-tower and the portal are from the first half of the 16th century. In 1532 the church was ransacked by the Turks, who also damaged the defence-tower. During the Baroque period, the two chapels on north and south were added as well as the presbytery.
