The Regional Museum Ptuj is a public institution covering the area of culture and taking care of movable cultural heritage of the entire Lower Podravje Region.
The Museum is divided into departments: archaeological, ethnological, cultural-historical, pedagogical, historical, restoration and a library. The departments are responsible for the historical documents and evidence, and take care of visitors. The general museum traces its origins back to 1893 when the Museum Society was formed in Ptuj and the first archaeological finds were exposed in the then Grammar School.
The genuine care of documents preservation is closely followed by their presentation. Therefore the visitors can benefit from various documents through multiple permanent collections at the castle: feudal dwelling culture, weapons and musical instruments collections, the Castle Gallery, Traditional Carnival Masks Collection, ethnological and reverse-glass-painting collections, and the collection of Marko Sluga (collection of antiques and works of art). The former Dominican monastery displays the numismatic and small archaeological items collections, the lapidary and the re-construction of the Mithras Shrine II. The Museum organises temporary exhibitions in its galleries. The Mihelič Gallery is situated in the Drava Tower, and the Art Salon in Prešernova Street, the main street in the old town. The ancient prisons display the historical exhibition: Ptuj and its surroundings in the 20th century. The Museum also manages the Mithras shrines I, situated in Spodnja Hajdina, and III in Zgornji Breg, as well as the Roman kiln in Ptuj.
